5 DIY cleaning recipes

Keeping your home clean doesn’t have to be expensive or filled with harsh chemicals. With just a few common household items, you can create effective and natural cleaning solutions. Here are five DIY cleaning recipes that will help you tackle tough spots and keep your home looking its best.

Drain Unclogging DIY Cleaning Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Boiling water

  • 1 cup Dawn dish soap

  • 1 cup white vinegar

  • 1 cup baking soda

Instructions:

  1. Start by pouring a pot of boiling water down the clogged drain.

  2. Follow with 1 cup of Dawn dish soap. Let it sit for about 5 minutes.

  3. Next, pour the baking soda down the drain, followed by the white vinegar. You’ll notice a fizzing reaction.

  4. Cover the drain with a plug or cloth to keep the reaction contained and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.

  5. Finish by flushing the drain with another pot of boiling water.

This method combines the power of baking soda and vinegar to break down clogs, while Dawn dish soap helps to dissolve grease and grime, one of my all time favorite DIY cleaning recipes.

Grout Cleaner

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup baking soda

  • 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide

  • 1 tablespoon Dawn dish soap

Instructions:

  1. Mix the baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and Dawn dish soap in a small bowl until it forms a paste.

  2. Apply the paste to the grout lines using a toothbrush or small scrubbing brush.

  3. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to allow the mixture to penetrate and break down the dirt.

  4. Scrub the grout lines again and rinse with warm water.

This grout cleaner harnesses the abrasive power of baking soda, the whitening action of hydrogen peroxide, and the grease-cutting ability of Dawn dish soap.

Streak-Free Window Cleaner

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 cup white vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon Dawn dish soap

Instructions:

  1. In a spray bottle, combine the water, white vinegar, and Dawn dish soap.

  2. Shake well to mix all ingredients.

  3. Spray the solution onto the windows and wipe with a microfiber cloth or squeegee.

This window cleaner leaves your windows sparkling without any streaks, thanks to the combination of vinegar and Dawn dish soap.

Natural Weed Killer

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups white vinegar

  • 1/2 cup salt

  • 2 teaspoons Dawn dish soap

Instructions:

  1. In a large container, mix the white vinegar, salt, and Dawn dish soap until the salt is dissolved.

  2. Pour the solution into a spray bottle.

  3. Spray directly onto the weeds, making sure to thoroughly coat them.

This natural weed killer uses vinegar and salt to dehydrate the weeds, while Dawn dish soap helps the solution adhere to the leaves.

DIY Dish Tabs

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup washing soda

  • 1 cup baking soda

  • 1/2 cup citric acid

  • 1/2 cup kosher salt

  • 1/2 cup water

  • Optional: 10-15 drops of essential oil (like lemon or lavender) for fragrance

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the washing soda, baking soda, citric acid, and kosher salt.

  2. Slowly add the water to the mixture, stirring continuously. It will start to fizz due to the reaction between the citric acid and baking soda.

  3. Add essential oil drops if desired and mix well.

  4. Once the mixture is combined and slightly moist, press it into silicone molds or ice cube trays to form tabs.

  5. Let the tabs dry for at least 24 hours or until they are completely hardened.

  6. Once dry, pop the tabs out of the molds and store them in an airtight container.

These DIY dish tabs are a great alternative to store-bought ones, using natural ingredients to leave your dishes sparkling clean.

With these DIY cleaning recipes, you can tackle tough cleaning tasks with ease and confidence. Not only are these solutions effective, but they are also eco-friendly and budget-friendly alternatives to store-bought cleaners. Happy cleaning friends!
